OUR STAIRCASE

The staircase winds

Steps ascending

Sprawling endless

Into the distance

Before us

Footsteps echoing

One by one by one

Upon each stair

Trudging on

Just the two of us

Somewhere along the way

Another set of footsteps

Began to lead the way

They were tiny and unsure

And we followed, joyfully

Eventually those tiny steps

We helped along the way

Grew in strength and confidence

And went their own way

Took a different stairway

Alone and out of breath we pause

To see how far we’ve come

In our view we see broken steps

We tried to fix but were left

Broken, left dangling precariously

Somehow we keep going

Without a guardrail to keep us safe

We cautiously ascend at a slower pace

Aging footsteps dragging

One by one by exhausting one

Holding hands we stop at the top

We look out at the landscape below

It’s then I realize if it hadn’t been for you

I wouldn’t have made it here

I wouldn’t have made it at all

I stand holding you, and gaze down at our life

Golden horizons melt the ends of the earth

Hiding the dark tunnels we had come through

The sun sparkles off all our crashing waves

And what once felt painful, now I see was paradise

  2. You should just write a book of all your work. You just blow my mind every time I read your poetry. :)

I picture you and your husband echoing these steps and wondering what’s to come ahead. :) Excellent!
