What happened to love, solid foundational love
The kind that sweeps you off your feet
Visit’s you with a smile that makes your heart skip a beat
Takes you by surprise and takes your breath away
Keeps thoughts of everyone else completely at bay
What happened to love, unconditional crazy love
I’ve glimpsed it in unexpected places here and there
But it’s always fleeting, like a butterfly in the air
It feels a bit like chasing the impossible dream
Just stories built on daydreams so it would seem
What happened to love, mythical true love
Like Big Foot or the Loch Ness a story built on truth
Pure imagination for folly’s and fools of youth
Is it too farfetched to believe in its feasibility
Or is it all a game of cleverly disguised futility
What happened to love, enduring simple love
The kind that sits in wrinkled skin and silvered hair
The kind that distinguishes between wrong and fair
The kind that contently sits in an old porch swing
Happy for all the things that sharing a life did bring
What happened to love, our surviving love
The love we started out sharing just you and me
The love we vowed and promised would always be
I hope with all sincerity that you begin to see
That true love doesn’t come easy and it’s never free

Loving someone even when it hurts. Loving someone through the mine field. We take chances that our love isn’t the one that ends badly and that our life won’t end up being one big regret.  In a moment of kindness we sacrifice ourselves for the hope that we weren’t wrong, that the love we maintain through the crazy insane times will be worth it.

  1. Great poem! I agree, love needs to be worked at and is a choice you make every moment of every day 🙂 Sometimes, on rare special moments, it comes freely and easily. Most of the time it is costly but in my eyes worth it.

  2. The same thing happens to love that happens to people… it gets old and wrinkly and starts to smell funny and tell the same old stories over and over and never puts the toilet seat up… or down… and is always late and never calls and… what were we talking about?
