THE BEATEN PATH

Robert Frost asked me which road I’d take
And I looked at the yellow woods pondering
Before noticing he, as well, was wondering
Once started, once decided, once planned
We would be either on one or the other
And we would either be alone or together
We sat and conversed in lengths and lengths
The possible value of the places they’d lead
After a time we discovered something true
And that truth felt a little bit like sadness
Our moment felt like the seasons passing
And time stood still as we looked ahead
He held my hand and squeezed it hard
And in his hand I felt a quickening pulse
As we set our sight on our separate roads
We walked hand in hand until the roads split
And we said goodbye as I took the beaten path
And he, my friend, took the road less traveled
