It happens whether we expect it or not. It’s how we get from one moment to the next. Each moment we can be one of three things. Better off. Worse off. Or the same.
My daughter is studying Newton’s Laws of motion in Science class. This strikes me as highly relevant because all the changes we are dealing with at the moment. Newton sought to discover why things behave the way they do. Basically, he proved the basic law governing change.
SIR ISAAC NEWTON’S LAWS OF MOTION
-A body in motion remains in motion. A body at rest remains at rest. Unless the body is acted on by an unbalanced force. (Inertia)
-The unbalanced force required to move a body is defined by:Force = Mass X acceleration (F = ma) (Momentum)
-For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. In every interaction there is a pair of forces.(Gravity)
Change has always seemed like such a chaotic word to me. It was something that occurred constantly and quite unpredictably. But if I apply Newton’s laws to the idea of change then we can see the reason for change. It begins to look much less chaotic. More controllable.
Change is what happens when something goes from one physical state to another. It is movement from one place to a different place. The path from point A to point B.
Socially it is important to see that change happens because of choices made.
I spent an hour last night discussing change with my daughter and how inevitably necessary it is. Someone else can make a choice that affects us but we can choose to use that change to our benefit or our detriment. We have some power over what point B will be.
Currently, I am going through the process of separation. This goes along with prepping and selling a home, as well as trying to find a new home. A few of the most stressful life events a person can go through. I made a choice. I want Point B to be pleasant for all of us.
I can’t look at the big picture sometimes without being overwhelmed. I only glance at the big picture in order to take baby steps in the right direction. Separation paper filed. House prepped. House listed. House will sell. We will find a house. We will buy a house. We will… one step at a time reach Point B.
Each baby step requires decisions. The most immediate decisions get the attention. Each decision and each change leads to the next.
People are naturally inclined to resist change. It is why elected leaders stay in office even if they suck. It is why companies might fall behind in technology. It’s one reason why many sad marriages stick it out until their children are grown.
We can’t be lazy with change. Change happens whether you deal with it or not. Not dealing is a choice. We can harness the magic of change and create the change we want to see.
The change desired will depend on the amount of effort we put forth. Depending on what we are trying to change we may need to exert some force. Things aren’t likely to change unless we interact, apply force, and are persistent.
It’s how we master life.
